Nadia Schambach (2001) is a Utrecht-based artist, designer, and creative researcher who graduated in Product Design from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht. Her practice is driven by experimentation and material exploration. In the workshop, she investigates form, composition, and movement. Through play, stacking, and the intuitive combination of materials, she develops organic constructions and spatial objects.

Metal serves as a key point of departure in her work. Through an exploratory approach, she examines the relationship between material and space. Chance plays an essential role in her process; unexpected outcomes and spontaneous discoveries guide the development of the work, often leading to new forms and insights.

Movement, interaction, and materiality are central to her practice. She explores how objects relate to their surroundings and to the viewer.

These sculptures consist of a metal skeleton covered with a latex skin. Through a mechanical system, the objects slowly breathe from time to time: they gradually fill with air before gently releasing it again. This subtle movement gives the sculptures a sense of physical presence and vulnerability.

In my work, I explore transience and the visible traces of time. The choice of latex and metal is essential to this investigation. Both materials inevitably change through time and use: the latex discolours, begins to sag, and wrinkles, while the metal gradually develops signs of ageing. As a result, the sculptures are never truly finished, but continue to evolve.

Each breath marks a moment of transformation. What initially appears vital and taut will eventually lose its ability to retain air. The work therefore exists in the space between an inanimate object and something that almost seems to become a living organism. It is precisely through this subtle movement and gradual deterioration that the sculptures invite reflection on vulnerability, time, and impermanence.

ENTROPY NO.1

SPINE WALL OBJECT NO.1

Part of a series exploring form and structure. The compositions emerge from the search for a skeletal framework for the breathing sculptures. They investigate the possibilities of a supporting structure and the ways in which form can develop from that framework.

ENTROPY NO. 2

I have a skeleton and a skin.
I breathe, but not by myself.
Overtime, my body changes:
The skin discolors, ages, and loses its tension.
At times I am active.
At times I am still.
This transition is visible, but not autonomous.
